WHILST OUT ON MY MANY WALKS around the beaches of Cronulla and the Royal National Park, I have noticed that something has finally arrived and that something is Spring.
Winter is finally leaving and as we emerge from under the covers and away from our cosy heaters I can sense a feeling of happiness and merriment. This Winter was recorded as being the coldest in 25 years so if you thought that maybe you were feeling a little sorer or lethargic than normal this may have been the reason why. We tend to hibernate throughout the colder months and consume probably a little too much of the carbs, sugars, coffee, etc.. Combining this with reduced levels of activity leads to feelings of congestion and listlessness.
Well, it's time to kick off the covers, pack away the heater and start to get back into your fitness program. Whether it's walking, cycling, running or swimming now is a good time to get going and to enjoy the sunshine, smell the flowers and to feel invigorated again. Now don't forget to stretch before and after you exercise as it might have been a while since you have done any and you certainly do not want to start Spring off with any injuries.
YES! SPRING IS A GREAT TIME to detox the body of all the congestion and fluid that may be lingering around. Here are some useful tips on how to detox and revitalise your body.
Massage is an excellent way of cleansing the body of toxins. By working on the circulatory system and the superficial layer of muscle as well as the lymphatics, you will start to feel better straight away. Our qualified aromatherapists Suzanne Ward and Julie Thompson-Moltzen will be able to provide you with a detox blend that will work through the circulatory system, giving you that feeling of lightness and freedom.
Does your skin feel dry from the cold Winter? Has spending too many days in air-con caused your skin to crack and to become lifeless? Natalie McDonnell, our Beauty Therapist has some great tips and treatments to make your skin glow and to put moisture back into your tired skin. Dry skin brushing speeds up the rate at which toxins are expelled from the body because it works on the blood cells and lymph tissues. The human body produces about one million skin cells per minute, which equates to over five billion skin cells per day, so it should come as no surprise that it will respond nicely to a little pampering now and again.
Natalie also recommends that you should still be using sun screen protection to help keep your skin safe from skin cancers and premature aging.
Our resident Naturopath recommends these top Detox foods:
Fruit and vegetable juices
Water
Raw foods/sprouts/greens
Whole grains/legumes and seeds
A juice is a good way to start. Veggie juices and fruit juices can leave you feeling content and re-energised. A blender is also a useful tool in your Spring detox program: making smoothies is easy and enhances digestion. Whilst detoxing, try avoiding refined flours, grains, fried foods, meat, pre-packaged meals and sugar. Steer clear of all drugs, including caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes. Everything you eat should be as fresh as possible and this way you can welcome in the Spring with rejuvenation and energy.
Carrier oil 25ml (Try Sweet Almond oil)
3 drops Lemon essential oil
3 drops Grapefruit essential oil
2 drops Juniper Berry essential oil
Massage the oil into the effected area by kneading and rubbing, breaking up the fatty deposits. Please remember though that cellulite is not a disease and the holistic approach is to exercise, massage, and diet as well as using aromatherapy oils. - Suzanne
Exercise in moderation and remember to always stretch and balance this with yoga or Pilates for mind, body and soul. Water is the best detox as it flushes out the waste and keeps the kidneys and other vital organs free from congestion and toxins. Please try and drink filtered water. 6 - 8 cups a day. However, if you are training intensively I recommend that you increase your intake. For every cup of coffee you drink it is advised that you drink two cups of water to replace fluid loss from caffeine consumption. - Will

Ka Huna is an ancient Polynesian massage method which helps to bring balance. Incorporating under body work and long flowing strokes using the forearms and palms in a rhythmic dance like massage it lifts the spirits and lightens the heart.
Ka Huna is also believed to help alleviate emotional blockages, negative feelings, relieve muscle tension, moves lymphatic fluid. What a better way to start Spring than with Ka Huna for detoxifying and re-energising the body and mind. - Julie
